civil rights law ACLU Dispatches: What's Really Happening At Our Border

Two of the ACLU's border experts get on the phone to discuss what's really happening at the border.

The situation at the Clint facility that was recently uncovered is just the tip of the iceberg. And illustrates a longstanding practice by Border Patrol to treat all of those in its custody in inhumane ways under a failed idea of deterrence through cruelty.

And in the course of documenting these issues they've interviewed countless families who have been held in these conditions including families with small children being held outdoors for days in the Texas heat forced to sleep in the dirt and gravel including children who days later still have bruises all over their bodies from being forced to sleep on rocks for days on end. Families describe extremely overcrowded cells where they're forced to stand on toilets.

They've talked to families who have made desperate pleas to officials while in their custody for medical care for their children who are very ill and been told that that the provision of medical care would just make them be detained longer. So did they want medical care or did they want to be detained or do they want to be released. Of course an impossible choice for a parent being held under such such conditions. And so they filed complaints with the Office of Inspector General who has subsequently come into these facilities and just recently announced that they would be issuing a report in the Rio Grande Valley regarding conditions that they observed there that they say are disgusting.

They conclude that we need to find ways of giving asylum to people from Central America in a humane way, in an orderly way at our border and making sure that border communities are not paying the price of this border rhetoric that we continue to hear of borders out of control.
